K. Noonan, Mayor
A
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR:
Summertime in Michigan ! What a grand time. Construction
of the major segment of our Hike and Bike Trail through Heritage
Park and Memorial Park will take place this summer. It will connect
the portion coming from the south at Van Dyke in Sterling Heights
at the Clinton river bridge to Auburn Road. The trail will also
provide a canoe launch site and fishing pier in Heritage Park, a
pedestrian bridge over the Clinton River to its west side, and passage
in Memorial Park along side Davis Street and the Clinton River.
These park improvements are funded with grants from the Michigan
Natural Resources Trust Fund and the Michigan Department of Transportation,
Transportation Enhancement program. The matching funds come from
the Downtown Development Authority and our Parks and Recreation
activities over the last decade. Dans Excavating received the bid
for construction as a result of the process mandated by the Michigan
Department of Transportation.
Concurrent with this major project, the Downtown
Development Authority, is also undertaking, with the help of our
Department of Public Works, the enhancement of our River Front in
Memorial Park, just south of Auburn at Davis Street. The improvements
will include access to the river, pavers, a stairway, and seating
areas. The DDA Board of Directors are to be congratulated for this
essential accompaniment to the Hike and Bike Trail work and their
support of both projects.
The arrival of our publication of the History of
Utica book is here ! The Utica Heritage Association has fund raised
for its publication and Gloria Olman, retired Journalism teacher
from Utica High School, has edited and enhanced the writings of
Naomi Gibbing, our treasured Librarian of more than four decades.
The final product is a magnificent hard cover book that can be obtained
through our City Hall or members of the UHA. Special thanks to Joann
Burgess, Pat Hallman, Bruce Fisher, Marv Stadler and Gloria Olman
- - the wonderful committee members with whom I had the pleasure
to work on this project over the last five years.
Lastly, and certainly not least, the City of Utica
lost one of its real treasures - Ofcr. Paul Kowalski passed away
suddenly at his home in Rochester on May 4 and we laid him to rest
on May 8. While this was Police Recognition Week, I certainly did
not think we would be saying good-bye to such a trusted and effective
servant in our community at the same time. Paul will be greatly
missed, not only by his fellow department members, his family and
friends, but by the larger community he so diligently served. Please
say a prayer of thanksgiving for his fine service and one of condolence
for his family and those who loved him.
Enjoy the warm weather and say thank you to a Police
Officer the next time you see them.
