K. Noonan, Mayor
A
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR:
The City of Utica Fire Department recently dedicated
a memorial fire siren that has been placed in front of the Department
on Auburn Road as recognition of the hundreds of men and women who
have answered the call in the fire service over the last 80 years.
It was the first siren purchased by the Village of Utica in December,
1925 and put into service in January, 1926. This December also marks
the 80th anniversary of the formation of a Fire Department in Utica.
Retired Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Noonan asked permission to remove
the siren from its location atop the former City Hall (now the Polish
Century Club) and to refurbish it with the help of welding students
at Utica High School in Mr. Boes' classes. Superintendent of the
DPW Bill Lang was also instrumental in the installation of the quartz
slab donated by Sullivan Funeral Home as its resting place. Happy
Anniversary Utica Fire Department!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of every community.
It is no different for the City of Utica. Throughout the year, a
small and dedicated band of individuals work hard on a variety of
boards and commissions to accomplish work that State law enables
or City Charter authorizes to be done. If you or someone you know
would enjoy giving back to their community in a very special way,
contact the Mayor's office by e-mail, phone or letter.
In mid-May, we saw another of our projects realized
as the funding from our Federal Community Development Block Grant
provided a new, beautiful playscape in Grant Park. Best Buy of Utica
sent a large group of volunteers to help our DPW employees as they
followed the direction of the distributor's construction manager
in its installation. Special thanks to them, Westlake Development
and Councilman William Osladil, who also devoted two days to the
project. Thanks to all who helped in the fundraising and the construction.
Stop by and enjoy the newest gem in our park.
Thank you to all the residents who cooperated with
our Department of Public Works as we are moving to change out our
water meters and upgrade to a more efficient and cost effective
electronic read system. Your help has made the process almost seamless
and the fine work of our DPW employees has accomplished a big project
in a short time frame. Radio reads will take far less time/manpower
and allow our personnel to concentrate on larger, more complex chores
that need to be done.
Change is the mantra of government as we are always
seeking better and more effective ways of providing services. It
is also a fact that volunteers need to go on to other endeavors
and we must offer a word of thanks to Robert Himes for 18 years
of service on our Board of Review, to Jason Gottschalk for his ten
years of service on the Municipal Building Authority and to Marcia
Opalewski for more than six years on our Act 345 Police and Fire
Pension Board. Good job and well done.
From our personnel ranks, we need to congratulate
William Calven as he retires from 29 years as a Dispatcher for the
Utica Police Department. Having listened to and observed Bill for
his entire career in the City, I can honestly say that he ranks
with the best Police and Fire Dispatchers we have ever employed.
Good luck, Bill
Jacqueline K. Noonan
